THE SCOTTISH STUDIES SOCIETY

Hart House
University of Toronto

Thursday April 12
Reception: 6:30 p.m.
Dinner: 7:30 p.m.

The Scottish Studies Society invites you and your friends and family to a very special Tartan Day Celebration on Thursday April 12, 2012.

The venue for this year's event will be the Great Hall at the University of Toronto's historic Hart House where we will recreate the ambiance of a Scottish castle in which you will enjoy a magnificent evening of fine food, music and dance — all with a Scots-Canadian flavour. Music and entertainment during the evening will be provided by Sandy MacIntyre and his Band Steeped in Tradition as well as by piper John Wakefield, Highland Dancers from the Richardson School of Dance and violinist Stefanie Hutka.

During the evening we will be presenting our 20th annual "Scot of the Year Award" which was initiated in 1993 to honour individuals who have achieved distinction through their contribution to Canadian society or the international community at large.

This year's recipient will be John Anderson Fraser, one of Canada’s most accomplished academics in the field of journalism.

John was born in Montreal in 1944 and raised in Toronto. After graduating from Memorial University he took further degrees in England and became a journalist with the old Toronto Telegram. At The Globe and Mail he made the surprising direct ascent from Drama Critic to Chinese Correspondent, which provided him with the material for his successful book, The Chinese, Portrait of a People (1980). He has since written seven other books, with another due out this March.

He was the Editor of Saturday Night Magazine from 1987 to 1994, moving on in 1995 to his current position as Master of Massey College in the University of Toronto. There, besides his teaching and administrative duties, he busies himself with contributions to a host of volunteer boards. Proudly aware of his own Scottish heritage, he is an active participant in many Scottish events, and has even introduced an annual Burns Supper to Massey College. (More information about John here.)

The dress code for the evening will be business formal. However, as it is a Scottish event with an emphasis on tartan, we are looking for as much innovation as possible. This is your chance to dress up for one of the most sophisticated events in the Scots-Canadian calendar.

We do hope you will be able to join us for this memorable evening, the proceeds of which will go to support the Scottish Studies Foundation, a registered Canadian charity established to raise awareness of the Scottish heritage in Canada through education at the university level.

So please keep your eye on this website as we get closer to April 12 for up-to-date information. We look forward to seeing as many of our supporters as possible at the event.
