Political intrigue, strong women, weak men, and countless conspiracies fuel this historical drama about the life of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. In the wake of the Protestant Reformation, Mary Stuart becomes enmeshed in a labyrinthine power struggle to determine the fate of the British throne. Heads roll and dynasties crumble when Mary, her unctuous husband Lord Darnley, her jealous half-brother James Stuart, Scotland's rebellious nobility, the Church of England, the Pope, and England's Queen Elizabeth all vie for control of the crown.

Many have told the tragic tale of Mary Queen of Scots but none more powerfully than Friedrich Schiller. Powerful is the word since, as Schiller himself put it: "Mary does not feel or excite tenderness. It is her destiny to experience and inflame violent passions." Like Mary Stuart herself and the legends that pursued her to her death, Schiller's drama continues to captivate the modern imagination nearly two centuries after it first appeared on the stage.
